I think one of the most beneficial revelations I ever received was that our hope should be placed in God - not in others, not in riches, not in our wants, not in our dreams, not in our abilities, and so on, but in God and God alone. In Him, and in what He promises... not what our flesh or circumstances desire or demand.
James 4:13-15
New King James Version (NKJV)
"Do Not Boast About Tomorrow"
13 Come now, you who say,
“Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city,
spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”;
14 whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow.
For what is your life?
It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
15 Instead you ought to say,
“If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.”

One of my favourite Bible verses is Psalm 37:4
To me, Psalm 37:4 does not say, "Delight yourself in God and He will give you whatever you want..." but, "Delight yourself in God, get close to God, enjoy Him and a relationship with Him, and, in doing so, your heart will be one with His and His desires will be yours; He will place His desires in your heart, then He will work to bring them to pass..." (His will be done...)
I've found it is much easier to trust God, and to hold on to hope, knowing the depth of God's love and that He truly does have our best interest at heart - even if that means not giving us what we think we need.
